Zoom AI Companion

Summary

Features, resources, and security tips related to Zoom AI Companion at UW-Platteville.

Body

Zoom AI Companion is available to all UW-Platteville account holders for In-Meeting use including Whiteboards and Recordings. It is not currently available on our campus for Zoom Chat.

You control which features, if any, will be used during Zoom meetings you organize. When enabled by you, these artificial intelligence (AI) features can

  • summarize Zoom meetings your organize and send you a copy that includes Next Steps (action items), if mentioned,
  • provide your participants answers to questions related to meeting content in real time during the meeting, and/or
  • generate content for your whiteboard based on text input.

In addition, Smart Recordings can be set to record meeting highlights, create smart chapters, note Next Steps, and provide speakers metrics on talk-listen ration, talk speed, and more.

At this time, Zoom AI does not work in breakout rooms.

Even when enabled, the organizer has the ability to pause AI function during a meeting when needed. The organizer also has the ability to edit the Summary, Next Steps, and Smart Chapters.

AI is not 100% accurate. Reviewing AI content before distributing to others is strongly recommended.

Enabling Zoom AI Companion for your meetings

  1. Log into your Zoom account at https://wisconsin-edu.zoom.us/
  2. Select Settings from the panel on the left. It should open to the AI Companion tab.
  3. Use the toggles to enable the desired feature(s).
  4. For each feature, use the check boxes to indicate your preferences. NOTE: For Meeting Summary we suggest you "automatically share summary with" ONLY ME (meeting host), which allows you the opportunity to review the content and make sure it accurately reflects your meeting.
  5. Your choices are saved automatically.

When you enable Zoom AI Companion features in your account, you are enabling them for ALL meetings you organize, unless you turn them off again. You DO have the option to pause AI functionality during meetings by selecting the AI icon in the task bar and selecting the feature(s) you wish to pause.

Security

Zoom AI Companion was vetted by UW-System prior to it being unlocked at the account level for each individual campus. Zoom does not use any customer audio, video, chat, screen sharing, attachments or other communications-like content (such as poll results, whiteboard and reactions) to train Zoom’s or its third-party AI models.

However, never use personally identifiable information (PII) or other sensitive information when AI is enabled. This includes but is not limited to student data, social security numbers, credit card numbers, or passwords.
