USB-C Port Stops Functioning - HP Laptops

Summary

Beginning with the HP G7 EliteBook series laptops, the USB-C port will occasionally enter its "protection mode" and stop responding or accepting input including battery charging.

Body

Symptom

USB-C port stops responding and battery stops charging. Devices stop being recognized which are plugged in to the USB-G G5 dock.

Solution

  1. Unplug all devices from the laptop including the power supply.
  2. Restart computer.
  3. Once at the login screen, hold down the power button for a full 60 seconds.  It is critical this is done for a full 60 seconds; time it if necessary.
  4. Wait. The computer will run through a series of self-diagnostics. It may take up to 30 seconds before powering back on. Be patient! The CPU cooling fan will ramp up to full speed twice during this process. Overall, this process can take up to 5 minutes to complete.
  5. Once the computer is back to the login screen, log in and reconnect any peripherals.
