Important Update: Changes to YouTube Caption Integration with Kaltura
The following information pertains only to videos hosted in Kaltura My Media that have been imported directly from a Youtube link. If you have uploaded the video yourself, this will have no effect on your videos.
We want to inform instructors that YouTube has recently changed how it passes information to Kaltura. As a result, YouTube is no longer transferring caption files to Kaltura, so captions can no longer be automatically generated for new videos.
YouTube videos added to Kaltura before January 5th will continue to function as they have in the past, including the captions. However, any new videos added to Kaltura from YouTube will no longer have captions automatically included.
To ensure captions are still available for your students, we recommend using the . While this method will not provide viewing statistics, it will display the captions provided by YouTube. Please note that unless you are the video creator, you will not be able to edit these captions.
When embedding YouTube videos in Canvas, be aware that YouTube may track user interactions with the videos through cookies, which is a standard part of YouTube’s platform. This doesn’t affect how the videos function, but it’s something to keep in mind if you have privacy concerns. For more information please see .
We understand that this change may require adjustments to your workflow, and we apologize for any inconvenience. However, to comply with accessibility requirements, it is essential that captions be included with all videos. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
