Purpose:

The purpose of this policy is to provide University of Wisconsin-Platteville Police Officers with guidelines for properly securing found and/or recovered bicycles.

Policy:

WI Stat. §20.909(1) Any personal property lost or abandoned in any building or on any lands belonging to the State and unclaimed for a period of sixty days may be returned to the person finding the same or may be sold at private or public sale by the state agency having charge of the place where such personal property is found.

Procedures:

  1. Found and/or recovered stolen bicycles
    1. Any and all bicycles taken into custody by UW-Platteville Police will be properly inventoried creating a “Found Property” incident, using the Talon TIMS records management system.  Included in that incident will be the bicycle’s:
      1. Make, Model, Serial # (if legible), Color, and any other physical descriptors)
    2. Photograph the bicycle and download that photograph into the incident.
    3. Attach a copy of the TIMS record to the bicycle.
  2. Storage
    1. After a bicycle has been properly documented, the officer can either contact the University Grounds Crew to transport the bicycle or the officer can transport it to the Annex Storage facility, west of the baseball field for storage.
    2. Bicycles recovered by the University Grounds Crew will be taken to the Annex Storage facility, west of the baseball field for storage.
  3. Disposal of Recovered Bicycles
    1. Bicycles not claimed by the owner will be disposed of at the end of the semester, following the 60-day holding period.
      1. If the bicycle is in decent and operable condition, it will be sent to the University Restore for resale.
      2. If the bicycle appears to be inoperable, the bicycle will be properly disposed of.
