Purpose:

The Purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines on when essential food and/or drink is acceptable to purchase using the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Purchasing Card (P-Card).

Policy:

The University Police Department Chief of Police or designee is authorized to purchase essential food and/or drink items if the reasons for the purchase are for basic human needs, with the University Purchasing Card.  These needs would include liquids for hydration and food for hunger.  Due to the fact that Police Department staff is required to be out in the elements for hours at a time, without a break, it is not always possible for him/her to meet these basic needs.  The end result could be bodily harm and even death.

Definitions:

  1. Basic Human Needs- food and water are obvious fundamental needs to keep the body alive, because body needs nutrients and water to work properly. If the body gets enough nutrients and enough fresh healthy food you will keep it in good condition.
  2. Essential Food and/or Drink- Items that will accomplish the goal of meeting basic human needs.

Procedures:

  1. The Chief of Police or designee will purchase the food or drink items using his/her authorized Purchasing Card (P-Card), and will follow the University Purchasing rules as it relates to reporting the purchase.
