University Policy: Human Resources
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville (UW-Platteville) has established a policy that in certain circumstances it will file petitions on behalf of non-immigrant employees seeking H1-B temporary worker status, permanent residence status, and other employment-based immigration status. The Human Resources Office is the sole authority for filing all immigration-related documents for UW-Platteville. The role of Human Resources is limited to those aspects of document preparation and submission that are directly related to the University's interests and responsibilities as an employer.
H1-B Visas
UW-Platteville will not file petitions for H-1B temporary work visas or other work authorizations or assistance for any positions that are not tenure-track, except in highly unusual situations and at the sole discretion of the Chief Human Resources Officer, in consultation with the Provost.
Petitions for Permanent Resident Status
The decision to file a permanent residence application must be authorized by the appropriate Department and Dean's office, in consultation with Human Resources. No promises can be made to current or prospective employees that the University will obtain permanent residence on their behalf. The petition process is lengthy, involving up to three government agencies, and the final decision to grant permanent residence must be made by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration service. It is never a certainty that the permanent residence will be approved, and therefore cannot be promised as an enticement for employment.
Categories of UW-Platteville employees who qualify for University Permanent Resident Sponsorship
- Tenured and tenure-track faculty;
- Research staff who hold or who have been offered a permanent research position in the Researcher or Scientist series and who appear to qualify for the "Outstanding Professor/Researcher" (OPR) category
UW-Platteville will not file permanent resident petitions on behalf of non-immigrant academic staff employees or university staff employees.
