New Canvas Portfolio

Canvas Update: Transition to the New Canvas Portfolio Tool

Canvas has released a new Portfolio tool that will replace Classic Canvas ePortfolios. This change introduces a modern, integrated experience for showcasing and assessing student learning but it also requires planning to avoid data loss.

Key Dates

June 30, 2026 - Final retirement date for Classic Canvas ePortfolio. This tool will be permanently shut off on June 30, 2026. After this date, users will no longer be able to access this content.

Migration & Conversion: What Carries Over (and What Does Not)

Important: There Is No Automatic One‑Click Conversion for Users

  • Existing ePortfolios do NOT automatically convert into the new Canvas Portfolio interface.
  • Students and faculty should expect to manually recreate portfolios in the new tool if they want them to continue beyond the retirement date.
What Users Will Need to Do Manually
  • Rebuild portfolio layouts and structure in the new Canvas Portfolio tool
  • Re‑upload exported artifacts (documents, media, reflections)
  • Re‑align evidence to skills or outcomes using the new tagging features

What We Recommend

  • All new portfolio work should use the new Canvas Portfolio tool
  • Faculty should plan ahead if portfolios are part of program assessment or capstone work
  • Students should export legacy portfolios early if they want to retain past work

What Is the New Canvas Portfolio?

The new Canvas Portfolio is now part of the core Canvas LMS experience and is designed to support both:

  • Instructor‑led assessment portfolios, and
  • Student‑created showcase portfolios

It is fully integrated into Canvas and does not require separate logins or external tools.

  • Built directly into Canvas
  • Two portfolio types
    • Evaluation Portfolios (instructor‑assigned, assessment‑focused)
    • Showcase Portfolios (student‑led, reflective and professional)
  • Integration with Canvas courses and SpeedGrader
Supports assessment workflows using familiar Canvas tools.
  • Skill and competency tagging
Evidence can be aligned to learning outcomes or competencies.
  • Modern design and editing experience
Improved layout, navigation, and multimedia support.
• Export and sharing options
Portfolios can be exported (PDF/HTML) or shared via public links.
