Software Requirements - University Owned Computers

University-owned computers running a supported operating system must be properly configured to be connected to the campus network. This also requires that a minimal set of software is installed on the workstation.

If you have a university-owned workstation, laptop, or tablet still running Windows 7 or Windows 10 please contact the Help Desk with your asset tag number to schedule your upgrade to Windows 11! (608) 342-1400 or helpdesk@uwplatt.edu.

Windows 11 Professional/Enterprise

  • Windows 11 (Minimum version 23H2, recommended version 24H2) see Microsoft Support - Lifecycle FAQ - Windows
  • Run Windows Update and install all critical updates. (Automatic Updates must be set to ON)
  • Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection
  • Microsoft SCCM Configuration Manager
  • Microsoft File and Print Sharing must be removed/disabled

Windows 10 Professional/Enterprise **Mainstream Support Ended October 14, 2025** - Contact ITS if you have a Windows 10 computer!

  • Windows 10 (Minimum version 22H2, recommended version 22H2) see Microsoft Support - Lifecycle FAQ - Windows
  • Windows 10 reaches end of life in October of 2025. All university devices must be updated to Windows 11 before this time. If you still have a Windows 10 device, schedule an upgrade by filling out the Computer Reimage to Windows 11 form.
  • Run Windows Update and install all critical updates. (Automatic Updates must be set to ON)
  • Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection
  • Microsoft SCCM Configuration Manager
  • Microsoft File and Print Sharing must be removed/disabled

Windows 7 Professional/Enterprise **Support Ended January 14, 2020** more information at Lifecycle FAQ - Windows

ITS Still provides limited support as needed. Some existing instrumentation/hardware requires Windows 7. These workstations will be supported. If you have a workstation that still has Windows 7 which doesn't have these requirements, please notify the Help Desk immediately.

Windows XP Professional **No Longer Supported by Microsoft** see What does it mean if Windows isn't supported?

ITS still provides limited support as needed.  Some existing instrumentation/hardware requires Windows XP.  These workstations will be supported.  If you have a workstation that still has Windows XP which doesn't have these requirements, please notify the Help Desk immediately.

Mac OS

Apple is still releasing updates and patches for the following OS versions:

  • macOS 26 (26.1) - Tahoe
  • macOS 15 (15.7.2) - Sequoia
  • macOS 14 (14.8.2) - Sonoma
