Backing up and Restoring Bookmarks - Google Chrome

Getting a new computer? Need to back up your bookmarks to restore on another computer? Follow these instructions to back up your Google Chrome bookmarks manually. To set up an automatic back up of your bookmarks to the cloud, use the browser sync functionality instead.

Backing up bookmarks

1. Click on the Settings menu (three vertical dots) in the upper right corner of Chrome and hover over Bookmarks and lists then select Bookmark manager or use shortcut keys by simultaneously pressing Ctrl+Shift+O.
   
   


2. Click on the Organize menu (three vertical dots) just to the right of the Search bookmarks field, then select Export bookmarks.
   
   


3. Select a location to save the backup file. Recommended location is your J drive. The file name will default to "bookmarks" followed by today's date. If you are backing up bookmarks from multiple browsers, add "chrome-" to the beginning of the file name and click Save.
   
   

Restoring bookmarks

1. Click on the Settings menu (three verticle dots) in the upper right corner of Chrome and hover over Bookmarks and lists then select Bookmark manager or use shortcut keys by simultaneously pressing Ctrl+Shift+O.
   
   
    
2. Click on the Organize menu (three vertical dots) just to the right of the Search bookmarks field, then select Import bookmarks.
   
   
    
3. Navigate to the file you saved during the backup process and click Open.
